Question How do canvas print businesses obtain copyright?
Most canvas print businesses offer prints of Banksy, Lichtenstein, Warhol and other popular images. Surely they do not pay for the copyright on these images? Where are the sourced from and what is the legal situation for these businesses?

Best Answer I suspect Banksy is a special case. He keeps his identity secret, which would prevent him from taking action for copyright infringement. So I suspect some businesses take the risk that they can get away with it. Copyright does not last forever, it generally expires 70 years after the death of the creator. This enables older works to be used for free, but not the pop artists you mention. I suspect that, contrary to your supposition, these firms are in fact paying a licence fee to use the copyrighted images. The fee per print will be small - only a few pounds or even a few pence! The licensing is probably done by the wholesaler, so the individual retailer will pay for it as part of their purchase price. If these things are printed on-site then the retailer is probably paying an annual licence fee for the use of the source files. I don't know who owns the copyright to Lichtenstein and Warhol artworks (someone will, possibly their estates) but these will be valuable intellectual property and I cannot believe they would allow prints to be sold without them receiving a fee.
