Best Answer I paint famous people and the ones that sell or generate interest are the ones that are currently biggest in the media and that have promise to stay big. I have had more luck selling commissioned portraits of the a celebrity of my commissioner's choice. First you must prove your ability to paint portraits by just making some paintings that might or might not sell. Use thease to convince rich people that you will one day be famous (or collectable) because of your ability. Then offer a really good deal- like a portarait of whoever they want for like two or three hundred bucks (usually you charge much much more but you like this person so you will give him a deal). Make sure that they tell their freinds how much you usually charge- this is part of the stipulation for doing it so cheap. Do three or four portraits for different rich people for really cheap with this same stipulation- "you have to tell your friends you paid my regular price". If your portraits are sellable, you will get word of mouth commissions and then you can start jacking your prices. Pick rich socially strong people to give the discount. It is important not to discount your work to just anybody. There is nothing wrong with trying to make your art work which you are passionate about marketable. Some answerers to this question are too dim to get the big picture- don't worry about them- do whatever you can to sell your work I say. Question Why do oil paintings sell for more than acrylic paintings?
I have been painting abstract art for years. I recently decided it might be fun to start selling paintings online, through websites and stuff like eBay. The problem is; Oil paintings sell for a ton more than acrylic paintings on eBay. Why is this? I forgot to mention. I use Acrylics.

Best Answer Oil is seen as a more "pro" type of paint - there really isn't a difference. However I have a few tips for your abstract paintings to go further :D no need to switch to oil, oil + abstract usually turns out crap and wasteful... although i have seen some very beautiful ones... anyway you got to PRODUCT your paintings. Make something about it unique and more than just "acrylic". For example I know this guy who did acrylic abstract paintings but encased them into plastic to make it look like enamel - a shiny plastic surface effect. His work was a little more commercial too and he sold to hotels... if you want to really get into selling (and if you havent sold any yet) it might be worthwhile considering your target market and what makes you stand out.

I wanted to know if acrylic paintings would last longer than the traditional oil paintings? What do professionals use so that their paintings last and if framing a painting will preserve it as well as varnish does or whats the best way to preserve them?

Best Answer I think if both types are kept in a safe environment and not exposed to direclt light, tobbacco, dirt, and moisture, they should hold up just fine. But one needs to keep in mind that oils take long to dry, and so they can initially absorb contaminants that may affect the deterioration of the painting later on, and acrylics are unproven over 100s of years simply because they have not been around that long.
